Surprisingly, the hardest part {so far} for us during this kitchen remodel {well, in my opinion} has been choosing the colors and finishes! I thought that this part of the process would be fun, exciting, exhilarating, and so on. Instead it ended up being a little overwhelming.
However, I think we have finally decided upon all of the colors for the kitchen!
How did we decide?
Well, we already knew our cabinets would be white and the fixtures {hardware and such} would be oil rubbed bronze {we already have the sink and its fixtures, so we are sticking with that route}.
{although this is a “before” picture from our kitchen, you can see the sink and fixtures in this picture}
We have already purchased our appliances, which are black. We also have a rug {see picture above}, which was already in the kitchen {that I would like to keep}, that we wanted the look and feel of the kitchen to be based around.
{this is the stove we purchased – more on our appliance choices soon!}
The next “detail” that we chose {in terms of color}, therefore, was the color of the countertops. We went with a dark countertop {since the cabinets would be white} and chose a color called “Mountain Slate”. We liked it for its shade of brown but also because you could pick up on a very small hint of black in it as well.
{the countertop finish}
And yes, black and brown are OKAY in the same space. The best way I can think of to explain this theory is to emphasize the fact that both colors go with every other color {they are neutrals}, so why wouldn’t they go with each other?
We also knew that part of our plan in the kitchen was to have an accent/decorative tile as a part of the backsplash. So, we decided to pick that out next {trying to best coordinate with our new countertops} and then base the rest of the colors and items around the tile.
Here is the accent tile we decided upon for the backsplash:
{please excuse the shine on the tile….it is still in the plastic wrapping!}
We chose a mixed mosaic tile. It has a mixture of glass and rock. My favorite part of the tile is the {sparkly} white rock. We purchased 12 x 12 tiles, but will be cutting them in half and use the 6 inch wide strip as the accent running along the middle of the backsplash.
We then decided to pair this accent tile with a white subway tile. Since the tile itself isn’t a true, pure white, we next picked out the white “color” that we would be painting the cabinets and trim in. It is called “Layered with Silver”. It is the best match {as far as a white hue goes} to the subway tile.
After that, we picked out the floor tile. We wanted a lighter brown {but not TOO light since we have A LOT of white going into the space}. We chose a ceramic tile that best matched the hue of the light brown glass portion of the accent tile.
After these items had been chosen, we could finally settle on the paint color for the walls and ceiling.
{trying to pick out the wall color}
Originally I was thinking a blue-ish grey for the wall color would be best to coordinate with the blue-ish grey stone in the accent tile {I was posed with the question as to whether I was looking at a blue or a grey while trying to choose….the answer is still up for debate}.
However, we ended up going with more of a brownish-grey {so, is it brown or grey?…..I can already hear the question now}. The color is called “Sheet Metal”.
Finally, we chose the ceiling color. “Say, what?!?!?!” you might be thinking. “You mean the ceiling isn’t going to be white? Isn’t that the only color a ceiling is supposed to be?!?!”……NO WAY! Treat the ceiling as if it were another wall in your room!
Of course, white is a perfectly fine color for the ceiling, it is just not our cup ‘o tea any longer. After we painted the guest bedroom ceiling an actual color, we knew that would always be a part of the design choice {color on the ceiling, that is}.
For the ceiling, we essentially chose a lighter version of the walls rather than a new shade {like in the guest bedroom}. The color is called “Route 66”. Where do they come up with these names, huh?
{the final compilation….let’s pray it all looks okay once actually IN the kitchen and not just on a 3 inch wide sample}
All of the paint colors are colors by the Dutch Boy brand of paint, however we will not be using that brand to actually paint with {more on the type of paints we chose and why later}.
If you REALLY want to use the same colors, here are the tint codes:
Lined with Silver – DW35
Sheet Metal – F15-2
Route 66 – F14-3
On a separate subject, we received icky news yesterday. Our countertop order will not be in as it was originally planned {the company is behind in production}. We are waiting to hear back as to when they do think the countertops will be in, but it looks like we will not be completely finished by Easter as planned. We may end up bumping our vacation back a couple of days {from the sounds of things}, and we are hoping that is all the more of a delay we will have.
Even without countertops, however, maybe I will still try and surprise Graham with an Easter ham {well, maybe now it won’t be the biggest surprise, sorry Graham}.
