Graham and I just got done planting our garden for this season. One thing that we always struggle with is the amount of space we should leave between plants, especially tomato plants. We also learned {the hard way} a couple of years ago that you should most definitely cage or stake your tomato plants.
I just came across this video on Burpee.com that gives a brilliantly simple comparison between caging versus staking the plants.
Personally, Graham and I prefer caging for the simple fact that it is less time consuming to keep up! However, after watching this video, I have learned that if I were more limited on space, staking would be the best option.
I also agree with the information in the video in regards to spacing – we plant our tomato plants four feet apart {minimum}. This was the hardest part for us to learn – when the plants are young {and so small} it seems like too much space between them. I promise, it is not.
Without a doubt, the tomato plants will become very bushy and widen. Last year we planted our tomato plants four feet apart and used cages. We could barely walk in between the plants when they were fully grown!
If you are thinking about planting tomato plants, I highly suggest watching the short four minute video on Burpee.com to determine which method {caging versus staking} would be best for you.
{ I would love to hear which method you prefer and why…how does your garden grow? }
